I am directed by Secretary Sir E. Grey to acknowledge

the receipt of your letter No.26198 of the 5th. instant
enclosing a copy of a letter from the Board of Trade with
regard to the question of erecting lighthouses on the Pratas
and Paracels islands.
Sir E. Grey desires to leave the question of the
necessity for these lights to the decision of the Secretary
of State for the Colonies and of the Board of Trade,, but
he will be prepared however, should they desire him to do

to take the necessary steps to obtain the views of the
other Governments likely to be interested in the matter,
although it appears to him from the opinion expressed by
the Board of Trade that any proposals for sharing the
expense of a scheme of lighting will be unlikely to meet
with a favourable response.
